Air Starters are devices used to help start large gas turbine or diesel engines by proving power for the initial rotation. Compressed air is typically used to push the piston downward before the air-start valve takes over to continue with the rotation. After this, fuel is injected to start the engine after cutting off the air flow.
An air starter unit for a engine consists of a turbine, which is of axial or inward flow, connected with a High Pressure Compressor through a gearbox, valves and other piping mechanisms.

Air Starters run smoothly as long as supply of air lasts. Air Start systems are expensive to maintain due to their complex requirements like presence of extra valves in the cylinder head for free air flow and complex operation controls.
