JNPT Port of Maharashtra (Mumbai)

Jnpt Mumbai port, broadly known as Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (or Nhava Sheva) is one of the busiest ports in India. This port was named after the respected prime minister of India, Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru. The port lies opposite to the mainland of Mumbai in Thane creek. Jawaharlal Nehru port trust run this port and thus it has been given a nickname, "Jnpt". The port trust authority planned to construct the port in the year and the plan was matured after long 24 years. Finally, in May 1989 the port was inaugurated. The primary purpose of constructing this port was to relieve pressure on Mumbai Port, which was the most eminent port of that time. Though the autonomous body runs the port but it is fully owned by the Government of India.

At present this port is being used as a major medium of transporting different articles for several reasons. Firstly, it offers ferry services to another most important spot - the Gateway of India. Moreover, the port is connected to all nearby rail networks and major highways. Also, it has admittance to other surroundings of Maharashtra, along with neighboring city Mumbai. Not only that, it is well connected to other important cities of India like Gujarat, North Indian cities, Karnataka, etc. The nearest railheads (suburban) of the port are Panvel and Belapur. At present, Jnpt Mumbai port is handling near about 65% of total India’s container traffic.

Terminal of Liquid Cargo Through JNPT Port

A liquid cargo terminal (twin berth) on this port has been introduced by BPCL, commercially known as Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited. The relationship was developed between these two organizations on BOT basis so that BPCL can both export and import all kind of liquid cargo through the port. After the contact was signed, BPCL and the port authority together established a piled jetty that is 40.5 meter wide and 300 meter long so that it can berth ships on its both sides. At present, it carries almost 5.5 million tones of liquid cargo every year. The port authority employs a special group of ship chandlers that supervise this process. They take care of other professionals who serve the process of loading and unloading the liquid cargo. The port has many other facilities to export liquid cargo like other important Indian ports such as Pipava port, Sikka port etc.


Container Handling Through JNPT Port

The port offers excellent facility to carry different containers, one particular terminal for liquid along with three draught berths (shallow) that carry different other cargoes. Near about 23 freight stations are active in the port that are used to load and unload containers. Along with port professionals, ship tore suppliers also are engaged in this process to complete these tasks successfully. At present, the port authority is planning to work with more marine contractors to offer additional services like desk cargo service, importing and exporting more materials, along with the regular ones.

JNPT Port in News

The year 2011-12 was prosperous for this Jnpt Mumbai port because this year the port handled almost 65.75 million of total cargo including liquid cargo. This was one of the most important records that other ports could not have reach yet. 58.25 of the total 65.75 million was containerized cargo and 6.66 million was liquid cargo that was handled by the port authority.
